The Future of Public Relations: Seizing the Opportunity

Bulldog Media Relations Summit Virtual Conference: The Future of Public Relations Seizing OpportunityI wasn’t able to attend this year’s Bulldog Reporter’s Media Relations Summit workshop (in New York) in person earlier this month. However, I did have the opportunity to attend virtually. 

Speakers for the panel “The Future of Public Relations: Seizing the Opportunity” consisted of:

  • Aedhmar Hynes, CEO of Text 100
  • Matt Harrington, president and CEO of Edelman U.S.
  • Peter Land, SVP, communications, at PepsiCo Beverages Americas
  • Martin Murtland, VP, solutions for corporate communications for Dow Jones Inc.

I’ve listed some of the key points that I heard in the podcast. (NOTE: Unfortunately since there was only audio and no video, I was unable to keep track of exactly who was speaking at some times – so my apologies, in advance, to the panel if I’ve not credited you with your quotes.)

Hynes talked about marketing, advertising, public relations, etc. all being separate departments with separate budgets, as this is the business model that’s served well in the past. However, in reality, the future of the industry is about communicating the brand of the organization. What are the goals as a whole and what are the skill sets that match those strategic goals? This is the time for organizations to think about the fundamental concept of moving away from managing information or news to shaping and directing conversation.

Companies must influence the influencers. The concept of third-party advocacy has never been more important than it is now.

As in any discussion of PR these days, the conversation moved to changes in ROI and measurement and analytics. We all know we should get away from ad value equivalency, but what do we use in its place (aside from media value)?  How do you know your campaign is a success?  There are many tools out there that measure “online buzz.” Yet what does that really mean?  It goes back to where you start – when you set your goals, they must be measurable. Measurable goals will drive your reporting and allow you to determine which strategies were successful.   

So, what does the future look like for public relations?

  • PR now has more opportunity and voice as it relates to corporate strategy. In other words, PR professionals are gaining more access to the C-suite.
  • The future (of PR) is about confidence and being nimble. According to Land, we must be able to move incredibly fast and confident to walk into our CEO’s office and make suggestions.
  • The move away from “agency of record” was briefly discussed because corporations have multiple needs (e.g., advertising, digital, creative, B2B, direct to consumer, etc.)  
  • The next decade in public relations is predicted to be the most exciting in history thus far. It may seem like it’s “back to the future,” as some have lost sight of fundamental best practices, but we must now come back to this strategic consulting in shaping views, per Hynes.

Why It Pays to be the Influencer for Sales and Retention Efforts

Influence marketing is beginning to showcase itself as an effective tool in social media strategies. Companies such as Starbucks and Virgin America have partnered with Klout , a startup that measures influence on Twitter, to identify influencing social media users. The criteria used to identify key influencers include more than 25 variables used to measure “true reach,” “amplification probability,” and “network score.” Klout’s website explains that, “The size of the sphere is calculated by measuring True Reach (engaged followers and friends vs. spam bots, dead accounts, etc.). Amplification Probability is the likelihood that messages will generate retweets or spark a conversation. If the user’s engaged followers are highly influential, they’ll have a high Network Score.”

The examples of Starbucks and Virgin America shows how companies are reaching out to find influencers to (in the words of Frank Sinatra) “start spreading the news” or share their valued opinion on a product or service. However, it can be just as important for the company to be the influencer, especially in B-to-B marketing. Being an influencer means you need to create a following (True Reach), have smart and interesting things to say (Amplification Probability) and connect with other shakers and movers (Network Score.)

This article, appearing on The Drum, offers some tips for effective influencer marketing,  among them: 

  1. Focus on the Influencer.
  2. Focus on Transactions.
  3. Focus on the Story, not the pay-off.
  4. Measure what counts.

If want to become an influencer then scoring high in these areas will pay off for your sales and retention efforts. If people come to know and like you, they will want to buy from you. Co-founder of influencer marketing company Pursway, Ran Shaul states, “The fundamental marketing challenge today is more strategic than tactical. Numerous studies all draw the same conclusion – the majority of people buy based on the conversation and recommendations of trusted friends, family members, colleagues and, increasingly, online reviewers.”

He then goes on to cite Nielsen’s latest Global Online Consumer Survey, which revealed that out of over 25,000 Internet consumers, from 50 countries, “90 percent of consumers surveyed said they trust recommendations from people they know, while 70 trust consumer opinions posted online.” Incidentally, 70 percent of consumers surveyed also indicated that they “trusted brand websites completely or somewhat.” With 64 percent listing that they trust “brand sponsorships.”

How does this translate to sales and retention efforts? Becoming the influencer (directly or indirectly) gives you direct connection to potential clients who will remember you when they are looking to buy. These types of relationships increase brand awareness and prove you are a trusted advisor through thought leadership. Potential clients plugged into the industry chatter will know who you are and what you are about. Social Media has made it incredibly easy to share information. You no longer have to write a book to be considered an expert or impact the community.

As an example, I loved watching the phenomenal initiative; “Help A PR Pro Out” (HAPPO) impact the PR community. The campaign partnered together “PR Pros” with recent graduates looking for jobs in this tough economy. It may not have been the intent of the co-founders, Arik Hanson, ACH Communications, and Valerie Simon, BurrellesLuce, but they instantly became industry influencers to the young generation of PR professionals. You better believe that the college graduates will look to them for future partnerships and will one day become influencers themselves, not to mention the group of current PR influencers HAPPO was able to group together. I think the HAPPO campaign hit all of the “high scoring” variables used by Klout on the head. They created a strong following of PR pros and college graduates, gave out incredibly valuable information and gathered together the PR industries current and future influencers.

Highlights from PRSA Travel and Tourism 2010: Keith Burton, President, Insidedge & Johna Burke, BurrellesLuce

JOHNA BURKE:  Hello, this is Johna Burke with BurrellesLuce, and I’m here at the PRSA Travel and Tourism Conference.  I’m here with Keith.

Keith, will you please introduce yourself?

KEITH BURTON:  I’m Keith Burton.  I’m with Inside Edge, and our company is an internal communications global consultancy.

BURKE:  Great.  Keith, you just did a session on helping PR professionals manage their career. For those people that can’t be here, could you give a couple of those tips on the next steps they need to take to be able to effectively manage their career?

BURTON:  Happy to do it, Johna.  It’s a huge topic and one that I’m asked about regularly. I made the point that today we have more intern candidates than we’ve ever had in our history of our business.  We have about 800 candidates that normally come in, as an example, in the entry level to the Chicago office of Golin Harris, which is our firm, as a part of Inside Edge in the work that we do. And in addition to that, we have a lot of mature professionals who’ve been in the business beyond those who are emerging, who are looking for advice on their career development today. And I tell them all the same thing, it starts first and foremost by understanding that we live in a world today where our clients expect us to be more strategic.  So that means we have to go beyond what we know about the craft that we practice, the disciplines that we work in, and understand how those discipline—this discipline influences the work that is being done in organizations.

We’re here with the travel/tourism section of PRSA and, you know, my conversation today focused around work that they may do in their outreach to communities that are served by the companies that they are a part of, understanding how to reach those consumers in new ways.  So being smart inside of the organization and outside by looking at a more strategic focus as opposed to simply doing what we’re asked to do is a very important part of managing your career.  Also, giving back into communities. I say often when I look at men and women who are coming in as candidates, I first look at their resume and see what did they do on the college campus?  What did they do in their communities in terms of their volunteerism?  Are they showing leadership there?  If they’re doing those things, it really in my mind establishes them as someone that I’d like to talk to before I may talk to other candidates. Doing the basics well.  Being a good writer, being able to understand how our profession is changing and, frankly, the new tools that are being brought into it with Web 2.0 now being an active part of our profession for many years, but how that will evolve in support of some of the classic things that we do with event management, for example, in media relations.  So, you know, doing the basics well, being able to demonstrate leadership, certainly being more strategic as both the business case for PR under the PRSA model will demonstrate for us, and then above and beyond that, knowing how our discipline will change in the future and how we can help our clients be smarter in those in our organizations that we serve, be smarter in their work.
