My thoughts on online vs real-life networking is that not one replaces the other... for me at least, it might be different for other people though.
However, it can be a good tool to maintain relationships, in a faster and easier way. Writing letter has always been pretty time consuming and sometimes expensive.
I actually have a blog that discusses the issue. I would be glad if you could check it out, give me your feedback and maybe refer to it!

Mary,

Thank you for your comments. I agree it does take multiple meetings to really get to know an individual in person and more online. I think the positive from both ways of networking are the additional opportunities you mention.

My perspective is that online will never quite replace in person networking. As a rule it can take half a dozen in person meetings to really get to know someone--depending on the style of the meeting, of course. I think that on Twitter, etc. it will probably take a lot more interaction. I don't have a rule-of-thumb estimate. But I do think it's possible to eventually make the connections, and that's a very good thing. We now have additional opportunities for discussion, and a wider circle of acquaintances, even if a number of them aren't personally close.
